Beginning of Lent, March 2011

Rolling dough for our Crown of Thorns......
So our Crown of Thorns (made out of salt dough and toothpicks) was supposed to be a nicely braided "crown", but the dough was long and falling apart and with my pregnancy brain, I just couldn't make it braid... I know, sounds ridiculous but true!  So that's the best I could do!  We got the idea from this website.

We put in 40 toothpicks representing the thorns, and each day we pick one out as a Lenten countdown to Easter.  I think next year I'll try to make it look a little prettier! LOL!

Ash Wednesday we went to Mass and got ashes on our forehead....Isabel drew a picture earlier in the day of herself with a tiny cross of ashes on her head.

We started learning a little rhyme "I try with all my heart to follow God each day.  And give my love to Jesus, that's the Lenten way."  (from our CHC curriculum).  I asked her to draw a picture of a way that she could give her love to Jesus.

She explained that in the finished picture, she is giving a candy to a little girl and the little girl is giving her a toy sheep and that when she gives to others, she is showing her love for Jesus.  So sweet!  I also love the rainbow words :)

Green sensory tub for St. Patrick's Day..... a green umbrella, green rosary, green beads and string, some gold coins and popsicle sticks in rainbow colors were the main items.

Some hanging decor we made for St. Patrick's Day.....they are hooked all over our house.

Our science experiment for the week is to observe how water travels up the stem of the flower all the way to the petals to nourish the entire plant....we dyed the water green with food coloring (yes, for St. Patrick's day) so that we could really observe how the water will spread throughout the petals!

Washing dishes at age 4???

Are you witnessing every mother's dream???

No...just making some rocks nice and clean.....

This was fun until she started throwing bubbles at me ;)

Dairy Free?? Couldn't be!

Mmmmmmm....brownie, strawberries and banana drizzled with a creamy white sauce???? Yep, it's dairy-free and it's how Isabel has been living since February 23rd.  I decided to put her on an elimination diet to see if removing a certain food would help her at all....

(Remember we have recently battled the strange finger rash and an unexplained night-only cough for over a month....on top of the whole failure to thrive and recent weight plateau.)

When the pediatrician still noted that it "looked like a food allergy" I decided to try the elimination diet and the first item that we've eliminated has been dairy.

So what has come of it?  These are the things I've noted, and while they may be unrelated, I guess that remains to be seen once her dairy-free month is over and she goes back on dairy.

**She has only complained 2x since Feb. 23 of a stomach ache....(before she would say that her stomach hurt after nearly every meal).
**Her night cough is gone.
**Her eating has picked up SIGNIFICANTLY at nearly every meal.
**Her weight is up .4lbs from 30.2lbs to 30.6lbs...........we have been at a "high weight" of 30.2 for months.
**The dark circles under her eyes remain....some days they look much improved, some days they look worse.

So what does all this mean?  I have no idea!  After the month is up, I am planning on re-introducing dairy to see what happens.  We've been keeping a food journal on her and I make as many notes as I can to try to document any changes that we notice.

Pictures from the last weeks of February, first week of March.

President's Day!  We worked on a President's Day book...she colored the pictures and wrote out their names like:  George Washington, White House, Abraham Lincoln....and unfortunately I cannot remember the rest because I've misplaced the book (I'm sooooo disappointed...she worked really hard on it)!

Feast of the Chair of Peter suncatcher craft that we made.  Idea found here.

Learning her vowels:

Spring bird nesting activities:  *thought up all the bird nesting materials a bird might use
*colored a spring bird in a nest and wrote out a sentence
*collected materials both indoors and outside that a bird might use and hung them in a netting bag in a tree.
*examined a real bird's nest up close :)

Started our tomato and sweet pepper seeds in indoor planters:
